Portuguese Cup matches preceded by a minute of silence for the victims of the earthquake in Morocco

The matches of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) competitions played between this Saturday and Monday, including those of the Portuguese Cup, will be preceded by a minute of silence, in solidarity with the victims of the earthquake that shook Morocco.

“The FPF will observe a minute of silence in all the matches of its competitions that will be held this weekend, in memory of the victims of the terrible earthquake that occurred on Friday night in Morocco. A hospitable country, full of energy and joy , Morocco We have been partners of Portugal and Spain in the construction of a beautiful candidacy for the 2030 World Cup, which from the beginning had the objective of bringing together Africa and Europe,” reads the federation statement.

On Friday, at 11:11 p.m. local time (same time in Lisbon), an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 on the Richter scale with its epicenter in the town of Ighil, 63 kilometers southwest of the city of Marrakech, caused at least 820 deaths. and 672 injured, 250 of whom are in serious condition, according to the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior.

“Seeing a tragedy of this magnitude devastate our friends is a cause of enormous shock and sadness for us. Offering our solidarity, with words but also with all the initiatives that can alleviate their pain, we leave a heartfelt Portuguese hug to Morocco. The tribute must be fulfilled in all matches of the competitions organized by the FPF that are played between September 9 and 11,” the FPF added.

Among other competitions, the first round of the Portuguese Cup will be played this weekend, with no club yet participating in professional competitions.
