Luis Rubiales will appear before the Spanish justice system next Friday as part of the investigation into the non-consensual kiss he gave to player Jenni Hermoso, after Spain’s unprecedented victory in the Women’s World Cup final on August 20.
The former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) was summoned by the National Court “to testify, as an instructor, next Friday, September 15, at 12:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. in Lisbon),” it can be reads in a statement, cited by the AFP agency.
This summons occurs one day after prosecutor Francisco de Jorge, of the National Court, accepted the complaint from the Public Ministry “for the crimes of sexual assault and coercion” against Rubiales.
The Spanish Prosecutor’s Office, which opened a preliminary investigation into the case on August 28, also requested that a statement be taken from Rubiales as an investigator, and Jenni Hermoso, as a victim.
On Sunday, Luis Rubiales revealed that he had resigned from his position as president of the RFEF, as well as his position at UEFA.
FIFA announced the opening of a disciplinary file against Luis Rubiales five days after the incident, for possible violation of the Code of Ethics of the body that governs world football, having subsequently suspended the Spanish federation leader for 90 days.
The footballer stated that the kiss was not consensual, contrary to what the resigned president of the federation claims. Earlier, in the stands of the stadium, Rubiales had touched his genitals to celebrate the Spanish victory.
Both behaviors earned him complaints from the Spanish Government before the Sports Administrative Court, which also decided to open a disciplinary file against Rubiales.
The current president of the RFEF, Pedro Rocha, announced the dismissal of Jorge Vilda from the position of women’s coach, being replaced by Montse Tomé.
