Belgian cyclist Van Hooydonck in critical condition after traffic accident

Belgian cyclist Nathan Van Hooydonck, of the Jumbo-Visma team, has been taken to hospital after losing control of his car at an intersection in Belgium, local police said on Tuesday.

A police spokesman told AFP that the 27-year-old professional cyclist was in critical condition and that the hospital was doing everything possible to stabilize him.

Van Hooydonck rode the Tour de France in July and helped his teammate Jonas Vingegaard win the race.

This Tuesday, the cyclist felt unwell while driving and crashed his car into five other vehicles at an intersection in Kalmthout, northern Belgium.

Van Hooydonck’s pregnant wife was also in the vehicle, but was not injured.

Jumbo’s sporting director, Grischa Niermann, said at the Vuelta a España, where the team is based, that his teammates were deeply disturbed by the news.

“We know he had an accident and is in hospital… I cannot confirm whether his life is in danger,” Niermann said.
