Fernando Santos leaves the Polish national team after a series of defeats

Fernando Santos has left the technical command of the Polish national team, according to the Polish press this Wednesday, which indicates that the coach has reached an agreement with the Polish Football Federation.

According to the Polish newspaper WP SportoweFakty, Fernando Santos met this Tuesday with the president of the Polish Football Federation, Cesary Kulesza, for almost two hours, without any final decision having emerged from that meeting.

Among the reasons for the dismissal is the lack of results of the former coach of the Portuguese national team, after successive failures of Lewandowski’s team in qualifying for the European football championship, according to Polish media, recalling that Fernando Santos arrived in the country with ” a great resume.”

Poland in qualifying group E is the penultimate of the five teams. Of five games, three were losses.

In light of the sporting misfortune, the Polish Football Federation is expected to announce the decision to terminate this afternoon.

Santos, 68, replaced Czeslaw Michniewicz, who led the Polish team in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, in which it ended up being eliminated in the round of 16 by France, runners-up in the competition.

Since January 2023, Santos has commanded a team led by FC Barcelona ‘star’ Robert Lewandowski, the team’s top scorer (78 goals) and player with the most international appearances (138 games), whose greatest achievements are two third places in the World Cup, in 1974 and 1982, in addition to the 1972 Olympic title.

The Portuguese coach had led the Portuguese national team since 2014 and left it on December 15, 2022, after giving Portugal the first two international trophies at the senior level, with the 2016 Euro Cup and the 2019 Nations League.

In 109 games, Fernando Santos achieved 67 wins, 23 draws and 19 losses, the last of which was against Morocco, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup.

Before, he had his first experience in national teams with Greece, a country in which he also coached PAOK, Panathinaikos and AEK, in a long coaching career in which he was national champion with FC Porto, won two Portuguese Cups and two Super Cups, and He also coached Sporting, Benfica, Estrela da Amadora and Estoril Praia.
