The 2030 Men’s Football World Cup will be played on three continents and will take place in Portuguese stadiums, in a special edition that will begin in Montevideo, Uruguay, to celebrate the centenary of the competition.
The news was announced this afternoon by the president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), Alejandro Domínguez, and has since been officially confirmed by FIFA.
The body that manages world football decided, in general council and unanimously, that the tournament starts in South America -Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay-, where the first round will be played, before traveling to Europe -Portugal and Spain- and even Africa , with matches in Morocco.
These last three teams “are automatically classified from the existing vacancies, after successfully completing” a process and decision by FIFA.
“Taking into account the historical context of the first World Cup, the FIFA Council also unanimously approved organizing a unique centenary celebration in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, where the first World Cup was held in 1930, as well as the celebration of matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, respectively,” reads the statement released this afternoon.
These three countries host one match each, the first will be played at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo.
In parallel with this election, FIFA also concludes that the joint candidacy of Portugal, Spain and Morocco, which “unites two continents – Africa and Europe -, not only in a celebration of football, but also in a unique social and cultural cohesion “.
