FIFA confirmed on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia is the only candidate to host the 2034 World Cup, hours after Australia officially abandoned the race.
In a statement, setting the deadline for applications for Tuesday, the body that governs world football announced that Saudi Arabia is the only country to have submitted a declaration expressing its interest in hosting the World Cup 2034.
In the same document, FIFA also stated that it had received a declaration of interest from the federations of Portugal, Spain and Morocco in hosting and organizing the final stages of the 2030 World Cup, as announced by these organizations on Monday.
With Australia’s withdrawal, Saudi Arabia is therefore preparing to host a World Cup, although this confirmation will only be known at the end of 2024, at the FIFA Congress, on a date yet to be scheduled, after “specific discussions have been held with candidates to ensure that applications are complete and complete and meet the stated requirements.”
Saudi football has been the target of investment in the past year, with several renowned players and coaches heading to the local league, including striker Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of the Portuguese national team.
