The four arrested for disturbances near Arena Reale before the match between Real Sociedad and Benfica (3-1) for the Champions League were released on Thursday after hearings in a court in San Sebastián.
The detainees, aged 21, 26, 32 and 42, spent the night at the police station and were brought before a judge on Thursday, who ordered their release, although authorities did not say whether the judge had imposed any precautionary measures on them.
The four fans, two of whom were assigned to Benfica, were arrested before the match, according to Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay, after serious incidents and arguments between members of both clubs were reported.
In addition to these arrests, authorities are seeking the identity of the Portuguese fans who lit torches at the Anoeta Stadium and threw them into the stands of Real Sociedad fans.
According to local authorities, the disturbances took place shortly before 5.45pm in Lisbon, the time of the start signal for the fourth round of Group D of the Champions League, and four people were arrested.
The altercation led to the throwing of chairs and pyrotechnic devices, according to authorities, and started in La Armería Square, next to the Reale Arena.
Already inside the match venue, torches were lit in the area intended for Benfica fans, towards the ‘txuri urdin’ fans area.
On the social network ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Real Sociedad condemned this moment, considering it “a shame” and addressing the fans of the Lisbon club directly.
Merino (six minutes), Oyarzabal (11) and Barrenetxea (21) scored for the Basques, who also wasted a penalty, while Rafa (49) scored Benfica’s goal, the first for the ‘red’ in the competition.
Real Sociedad remain at the top of Group D, with 10 points, level on points with Inter Milan in second, while Salzburg are third with three. Benfica, without any chance of reaching the round of 16, is fourth, still without points.
