It’s official: FC Porto cancels the extraordinary General Assembly to deliberate on new statutes

The extraordinary General Assembly (AG) to deliberate the new statutes of FC Porto, which had been suspended on Monday and postponed until November 20, was canceled this Saturday due to the withdrawal of the Superior Council’s proposal.

According to a note signed by the president of the Board of Directors of the General Assembly (MAG), José Lourenço Pinto, this call occurs “at the request of the management” of the national soccer runner-up, taking into account the “manifest lack of purpose” in debate.

The decision comes two days after a meeting between the members of the Superior Council, who ratified “unanimously” and in the “best interest” of the blue and white club a motion to withdraw the proposed statutory review prepared by it, the deliberation of which would require two-thirds of the votes in favor, but it did not even happen during the General Assembly.

In a statement, the advisory body, which is inherently commanded by José Lourenço Pinto, stated that it seeks to “appease the division that wants to be created in the Porto family.”

The works had been suspended on Monday by the MAG and then rescheduled for November 20, at 9 p.m., at the Dragão Arena, after an intense meeting with confrontation between the members, which, given the large participation, changed location in the last moment, going from an auditorium of the Estádio do Dragão to the club’s pavilion.

The main meeting resumed after 10:30 p.m., but several people left the place shortly after, after altercations in the stands, as demonstrated by the videos published on social networks and the stories of the members who managed to enter.

The next day, the management of FC Porto condemned the lack of respect and assured that it will use “the means at its disposal to identify those responsible for the physical attacks and will mobilize social organizations”, with a view to opening a disciplinary file, while that the Public Ministry (MP) opened an investigation into the incidents recorded at the Dragão Arena.

The new statutes replace April with June as the maximum limit for holding elections for the governing bodies of FC Porto, which will take place in the first half of 2024.

The hypothetical adoption of electronic and postal voting, a minimum senior membership of 15 years, instead of the current 10, to run for president or access to the right to vote after two uninterrupted years as a member were other changes in discussion.

The document also advocated the maintenance of SAD’s social capital in the face of the possible entry of new investors and gave more openness to the conduct of business between the members of the governing bodies and the ‘dragons’, protecting the “clear interest of the club.” .
