The NBA has always been a fantasy-friendly area. A kind of Disney of professional sports leagues, promoting the achievements of their main teams or stars over time in an almost fictional way. From the ‘impossible’ 100 points of Ursa Major Wilt Chamberlain – there was already an otherworldly dimension present in the nicknames of the main stars – in the distant 1960s, or the unrepeatable eight consecutive titles of the legendary Boston Celtics in the same decade, to the imprint of Magic stuck to Earvin Johnson, the league’s greatest showman, continuing His Highness’ status to Michael Jordan, the greatest of all time, also hailed as Air for his… supernatural ability to stay in the world for an eternity longer to hang in the air than his opponents. The incredible power of Shaq, the charisma of Kobe, King LeBron… the NBA has always tried to cultivate this “fantastic” side, as one of the league’s most popular slogans proudly echoed at the end of the last century, in an ode to the combined spectacularness with a tribute to the fans (fantastic). Well, in 2023, the NBA looks set to enter a new dimension of fantasy, riding on the shoulders of two ‘unicorns’ that promise to redefine the game of basketball.
