This Tuesday, Sporting called for an urgent normalization of the video referee (VAR) criteria in football, considering that it is important to guarantee that there are only specialists in that function.
“VAR is an essential tool for greater fairness and transparency in competitions. Whoever does not defend VAR does not defend the search for sporting truth. Therefore, sport urgently demands uniformity and understanding of the VAR protocol by referees “The referees win, the clubs win, the sporting truth wins,” reads a statement.
The lions affirm that in the matches with Vitória SC (2-3) and FC Porto (2-0) “it was very evident how the VAR adopted opposite criteria”, considering that “in both, it was Sporting that was harmed.”
“Sporting’s critical analysis of the refereeing criteria depends on the urgent need to define them and the transparency of the decisions. It makes no sense to adopt one intervention criterion one week and another the following week,” the club states.
For this reason, Sporting “also considers that it is important to move towards specialist and exclusive VAR referees”, although it recognizes that “the current number of referees does not allow it to be done at the moment”, challenging the Portuguese Football Referee Council. Federation (FPF) begins to “prepare the future”.
“Sporting recognizes the efforts of the Arbitration Council to improve refereeing and will continue to fight for sporting truth. This will never exist without free, independent and qualified arbitration,” it reads.
Sporting recalls that it was “alone when it presented the proposal to implement measures that allow the dissemination of audios and guarantee greater transparency in refereeing and integrity in the competitions themselves”, asking that good practices from other countries be adopted.
