Real Madrid and FC Barcelona expressed their satisfaction on Thursday with the decision of the European court, which considers the intervention of FIFA and UEFA against the creation of the Super League, a competition they both defend, as abuse.
“As one of the driving forces behind the Superliga, FC Barcelona believes that the verdict opens the door to a new high-level football competition in Europe, by demonstrating against monopolies in the world of football”the club said in a statement.
The Catalans claim that in the medium term “the sustainability of football depends on the creation of a concept such as that led by A22, the company that promotes the Superliga”.
Real Madrid also expressed “tremendous satisfaction” with the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), that this Thursday’s decision by FIFA and UEFA to ban athletes and clubs from participating in closed competitions is contrary to European law.
“We welcome with great satisfaction the decision of the Court of the European Union, which guarantees principles, values and freedoms”said club president Florentino Pérez, adding: “Football will never be a monopoly again.”
Pérez said that “from today onwards, clubs will be in charge of their destiny”, stressing that the club “fully recognizes the desire to promote the creation of competitions that attract fans from all over the world”.
“The freedom of the fans and the freedom of football have triumphed in Europe,” congratulated the leader of the Merengues.
The EU’s top governing body found UEFA and FIFA were abusing their “dominant position” in their move against the creation of the controversial football super league.
This is a decision that cannot be appealed and must be applied by the Spanish court investigating the case, in response to the complaint filed in April 2022 by the companies managing the sports project – A22 Sports Management and European Super League .
The Superliga project was initiated by 12 European clubs, leaving only Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus.
