The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) on Thursday reiterated the idea that the creation of a Super League is “a terrible idea for football” because it “violates all principles of sporting merit”.
“All-in [outubro de] In 2020, I expressed my total disagreement and rejection of the creation of a Super League. Three years later, I stand by my opinion. I think it’s a terrible idea for football because it violates all the principles of sporting merit.”the director said in a note on the FPF’s official website.
Fernando Gomes reaffirmed his position after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) considered this Thursday the decision of FIFA and UEFA to ban footballers and clubs from participating in private competitions, such as the Super League April 18, 2021 was suggested.
“If it becomes reality, it would be extremely damaging to football as a whole and Portuguese clubs in particular. Therefore, the FPF was, is and will be resolutely and firmly opposed to competitions organized outside the federations and leagues and strongly supports the European sports model,” he concluded.
The CJEU, the EU’s highest governing body, ruled that UEFA and FIFA abused their ‘dominant position’ in their action against the creation of the controversial football super league.
Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are the opponents of the 15 founders of the original project – although only 12 were revealed – which called for a competition with 20 clubs, fought against by various quarters, from sporting structures to national governments, including the fans themselves.
In October 2022, the company A22 was created, which promoted the project, which again adapted the original plan in February 2023, under new principles and a model with 60 to 80 clubs, which was open, without permanent members and based on sporting merit.
Also today, the company that promotes the Superliga, A22, has proposed “a new open European competition”, with “64 clubs divided into three football leagues” for men and 32 clubs divided into two football leagues” for women.
“The new competition proposal is the result of an extensive dialogue over the past eighteen months, involving many people from the football world,” said Bernd Reichart, Executive Director of A22.
