Benfica fan stabbed in Luz during half-time of the match with AVS SAD

A 44-year-old man suffered minor injuries on Thursday after being stabbed in one of the stands at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon during half-time of the Football League Cup match, a police source told Lusa.

This fan was stabbed in the abdomen, suffered minor injuries and, after being assisted by rescue teams, was transported to Santa Maria Hospital, a source from the PSP’s Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) said.

The incident occurred following an altercation between two Benfica fans during half-time of the match in the third round of Group B of the Football League Cup, in which the Reds defeated AVS 4-1.

The man suspected of the stabbing was no longer at the scene when police arrived and the PSP is taking steps to identify him, the same source said.

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica deeply regrets the stabbing of a fan during an altercation that took place during half-time of the Benfica-AVS match. This fan was immediately assisted and transported to Santa Maria Hospital, where he is stable”however, club da Luz indicated in a statement.

The red numbers also indicate this “all available information has been passed on to the authorities, who are tracking the attacker”.

Benfica qualified for the semi-finals of the Football League Cup on Thursday by beating AVS from the II League 4-1 at Estádio da Luz.
