The Football Players’ Union criticized the situation at Villa Athletic, a club created in the summer and registered with the Portalegre Football Association, which has left the players in a precarious situation.
“The last few weeks have been marked by two especially serious cases in regional football, which have left dozens of players, many of them foreigners, in an absolutely unacceptable state of need,” the union said in a statement on Wednesday.
The body chaired by Joaquim Evangelista stressed that, in the case of CF União Serpense, also with financial problems, Villa Atletic joined, a club founded in the summer and that would have turned out to be a “ruinous project”, creating a squad and technical team for the which there was no support capacity.
According to public information, the project, created by Fábio Lopes, together with people linked to music, led to the hiring, among others, of some well-known names in football, such as former player Meyong, to train the team, and veterans . Edinho and Andre Carvalhas.
“This case of Villa Athletic, in particular, shows that, regardless of the area of the country, attention and demand are needed in the process of licensing new clubs. The Union has denounced and insisted in recent years on the urgency of reviewing the licensing and scrutiny of investments in sports clubs and societies, increasing the demand and provision of financial guarantees, without which these phenomena will continue to occur”, the organization highlighted.
On Monday, the president of Villa Athletic Club, Fábio Lopes, assumed, in a statement sent to the Portuguese agency, that the club, which competes in the districts of Portalegre, is going through “very difficult days”, due to financial difficulties, and is looking for “feasibility solutions” of the project.
