The project of a soccer Super League, a closed competition for some of the best clubs in Europe, proposed in April 2021, “is dead”, assured the president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin.
“We are here to talk about football, and that [a Superliga] it’s not football,” Ceferin told reporters in Argentina on Thursday, in response to comments from the new leader of the company behind the project.
On Wednesday, the CEO of the company A22 Sports Management, Bernd Reichart, said that the Super League is still standing, albeit with a different format.
Reichart said that Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are discussing the creation of a European club tournament whose ranking would be based on sporting merit.
The three clubs are the only ones that continue to support the project, after the other founders (Atlético de Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Inter and Milan) abandoned the initiative 48 hours after its presentation . .
UEFA opposes the idea of a Super League and has a dispute before the EU Court of Justice (CJEU) against the project.
Also on Thursday, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) announced that it will implement “fair play” financial rules for clubs participating in continental tournaments, starting in 2023.
CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez said during meetings in Buenos Aires that the move is part of a strategy to make soccer more competitive in the region.
On Saturday, the final of the Copa Libertadores, the main club competition in South America, will feature two Brazilian clubs, for the third consecutive year.
“Four years ago Brazil began to change its tournaments. It’s not just about having more money, they’re doing well. We need the rest of the countries to follow that change,” said Domínguez.
