On Sunday, Boca Juniors became Argentine football champions, taking advantage of Racing’s 2-1 defeat to Boca’s biggest rivals, River Plate, to win its 35th title in its history.
In Marcelo Gallardo’s last game for River, third with 47 points, the win against Racing saw the rival take the championship, with 52, two more than second placed, in a game in which Avellaneda’s team lost a penalty for 90 minutes, 2 -1 at 90+5.
The squad led by Hugo Ibarra, who took over in July in exchange for Sebástian Battaglia, drew 2-2 with Independiente in the final round of the championship at the same time, with help from the ‘eternal rival’.
It is the 35th league title of the ‘Xeneize’, who are ‘led’ by ex-Sporting Marcos Rojo, and participate in the League Cup, won in May.
