The cities of Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and Matosinhos will host the 18th Conference of Sports Ministers of the Council of Europe which, in 2024, will take place for the first time in Portugal, the Government announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports announced the victory of the Government’s candidacy for the organization of the conference in the region of the inter-municipal association Front Atlântica, during the 17th ministerial meeting, which takes place in Antalya, Turkey. .
“For the 18th Conference of Ministers of Sport of the Council of Europe – which will include in its program other conferences and debates before and after the main Conference – the Portuguese Government proposes debates on the ‘protection and safeguarding of children and young people in Sport ‘, ‘gender equality in sports’ and ‘sports diplomacy’, issues that have been a priority in the orientation and action of this area of government”, detailed the guardianship.
Portugal is represented at the 17th conference by the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Correia, representing the Vice Minister and Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, who oversees the sector.
Looking ahead to the next meeting, the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport considers that holding the conference in Portugal “contributes to the international affirmation of Portuguese sport, in line with the Government’s programme”.
The Council of Europe sports ministers’ conferences are held every two years and bring together the leaders of the 46 European countries that make up the Council of Europe, as well as Canada, Israel and Morocco.
“In the year of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, the 18th Conference of Ministers of Sport of the Council of Europe will make it possible to write a historical page in national, European and international sport,” predicts the Portuguese Government.
