Carlos Carvalhal is the new coach of Celta de Vigo

The Portuguese Carlos Carvalhal is the new coach of the Celta de Vigo soccer team, replacing the Argentine Eduardo Coudet, who has signed a contract until 2024, the Spanish club announced on its official website on Wednesday.

“Carlos Carvalhal will be Celta’s coach until June 2024, after the agreement reached with the club in the last few hours. The Portuguese coach arrives at the sky-blue team backed by extensive experience and with a career marked by notable successes”, reads-si in the note published by the Galician club.

The 56-year-old will have his first experience in Spanish football and will join “immediately at the head of the team.”

Carvalhal, who had been without a club since the beginning of October, when he left Al Wahda from the United Arab Emirates, will ‘catch’ Celta de Vigo at a time when the team is in 16th place in the Spanish League, just one point above the relegation zone.

This will be the former central defender’s fifth experience as a coach outside Portugal, after spells in England (Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City), Turkey (Besiktas and Istanbul BB), Greece (Asteras Tripoli) and the Emirates.

In Portugal, Carvalhal won the Portuguese Cup with Sporting de Braga, in 2020/21, in his second spell at the Minho club, having previously led Rio Ave, Sporting, Marítimo, Vitória de Setúbal, Beira-Mar, Belenenses, Leixões, Desportivos das Aves, Vizela, Freamunde and Sporting de Espinho.

At Celta, the Portuguese coach will meet his compatriot Gonçalo Paciência, a striker who arrived in Vigo this season and has played eight games and scored a goal in the Spanish league.

Carvalhal’s debut is scheduled for Saturday, with the reception of Osasuna.

Hours before, the Galician shield had announced the departure of the Argentine Eduardo Coudet, who was then, since November 2020, at the club.
