Pedro Pichardo, European, world and Olympic triple jump champion, extended his contract with Benfica. A “multi-year” link, which includes “the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle and the ambition for the next cycle,” the club’s statement said. The next cycle is Los Angeles 2028.
The athlete was “proud and grateful” for the Eagles contract extension. “Staying at home is an honour, it was Benfica who supported me when I made the decision to leave the country where I was born, and they have supported me so that I can continue at the highest level of sport. For me it is an great honor and I feel very lucky,” he told club media.
Pichardo, 29, born in Cuba, won the gold medal at the Eugene World Championships, in the United States, and the European Championships in Munich, Germany, and also won the silver medal at the Belgrade Indoor World Championships.
The Portuguese athlete is also the Olympic champion in exercise, having won the triple jump at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. “I want to continue adding and reaffirming the titles I have won. I want to keep winning titles for Benfica and for the country. I still have a small debt to myself, to reach the world record [18,29 metros]and I will work hard for it”Pichardo explained.
