A few dozen fans went to the airport this Friday to wish the Portuguese soccer team a good trip and a long stay in Qatar, where the 2022 World Cup will be played starting on Sunday.
It was 11:30 am when the bus, decorated with the colors of the Portuguese flag and in which the delegation of the ‘quinas’ team travels, arrived at the departure area of the Humberto Delgado airport in Lisbon, where some Portuguese and the curious fans were already waiting for them.
As the players got off the bus, requests for autographs and photographs piled up, but the ‘heyday’ came when Cristiano Ronaldo got out of the car, and ran to ask for supporters at the airport entrance gate.
The Portuguese captain has been, in recent months, involved in several controversies at Manchester United, which intensified with the interview given to the English journalist Piers Morgan, broadcast this week, where he criticized the club and the coach.
The players João Félix, Bernardo Silva and William Carvalho also signed autographs and took photos with the fans, but always at a fast pace, with few stops, since the flight was scheduled for 12:30 to Doha, although it would arrive afternoon. .
The presence of two elements of Amnesty International Portugal also stands out, after the complaints of thousands of deaths at work in the tournament and the call for the rights of supporters of the LGBTQIA+ community, the object of persecution in Qatar.
Earlier, the Portuguese delegation had left the City of Soccer, in Oeiras, to the applause of dozens of children, who received autographs from some of the players called up for the 2022 World Cup and from the coach, Fernando Santos, who even had the opportunity to be photographed with some young fans of the ‘quinas’ team.
Portugal’s debut in Group H is scheduled for November 24, against Ghana, before facing Uruguay on November 28 and Paulo Bento’s South Korea on December 2.
The 22nd edition of the World Championship starts on Sunday, with the duel between the host Qatar and Ecuador, for Group A, and ends on December 18.
