Network closed for 2023. American Logan Sargeant signs for Williams

This Monday the grid of 20 drivers who will be part of Formula 1 in 2023 was defined. Logan Sargeant, fourth classified in Formula 2 in 2022, is promoted in category and signed by Williams Racing and, at his side, will have a teammate Alexander Albon, who remains in the team.

The American and British development driver replaces Nicholas Latifi, who has driven the Grove, UK-based team’s number six car for the past three seasons, scoring just nine points from 61 grands prix contests.

Sargeant had already reserved the seat at Williams a few weeks ago. However, he needed to finish the season in the top six in Formula 2 to obtain the superlicence, the document that gives drivers the opportunity to drive in the premier class of motorsport.

The 21-year-old American assured, in statements to the British team’s website, that, during the last weekend of the season, “he felt the weight of 15 years of hard work on his shoulders” and was happy to have conquered his main objective and for having fulfilled a “childhood dream”.

Logan Sargeant is the first American driver in Formula 1 since Alexander Rossi who, in 2015, took part in five Grands Prix at the wheel of a Manor Marussia car.

Formula 1 returns on March 5, 2023 at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain. In addition to the Williams driver, Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and Nyck De Vries (Alpha Tauri) will also make their full-time debut in the competition. Pierre Gasly (changes Alpha Tauri for Alpine) and Fernando Alonso (changes Alpine for Aston Martin) and there is still a return to the paddock, with Nico Hulkenberg signing for Haas.
