Team victory with Ghana was seen on television by 3.9 million people

Nearly four million people watched the first match of the Portuguese national team at the 2022 World Cup, in Qatar, against Ghana, which was broadcast on TVI and is the “most watched match” to date, according to Universal McCann (UM).

The Portuguese national football team defeated Ghana 3-2 in Doha on Thursday in the first match of the World Cup.

“TVI aired the debut game, which was watched by a total of 3.9 million people, with an average audience of 2.3 million and part of 64.5%”, refers to UM, the group’s media agency media brands.

To date, he adds, “this was the most watched match of the group stage, followed by the Brazil v Serbia and France v Australia”.

According to Univesal McCann, “TVI’s broadcast of this game was a good bet for the station as it was a part of 22.2%, an increase of 6.8 percentage points over the accumulated average for the month of October”.

However, the team’s first match from the corners “attracted less crowds compared to the debut matches of other championships such as Euro 2020 and the 2018 World Cup”.

The game’s airtime “may be the reason for the lower audience, as it was held on a weekday and during working hours, the earliest we’ve ever seen,” UM admits.

Analyzing the game minute by minute, “there was a growth trend throughout the broadcast”.

The second half of the match “had special attention on the part of the Portuguese where the five goals were scored in the same, and the maximum crowd was already close to the final whistle,” he concludes.
