Historical fragment: she will be the first female referee in a men’s World Cup match

The French referee Stephanie Frappart will go down in football history when, this Thursday, she gives the initial whistle for Costa Rica-Germany in Group E of the World Cup.

She will be the first woman to direct a match in a men’s World Cup, in a match in which she will have the Brazilian Neuza Back and the Mexican Karen Díaz Medina as assistants.

International since 2009, Frappart had already been the fourth referee of the Mexico-Poland match in this tournament.

Before, she had already made history by being the first woman to referee a French league match, in 2019, the first to direct a European Super Cup, in the same year, and the first to command a Champions League match, in 2020.
