Australia surprised and defeated Denmark 1-0 on Wednesday. With this result, the football qualify for the second time in history for the round of 16 of a World Championship, a repeat of the 2006 achievement.
In a game where Denmark dominated practically in every way, the Scandinavians never managed to capitalize on the attacking bent they showed: with 14 attempts to score, only three shots were framed on target. Until Australia scored in the 60th minute through Mathew Leckie who shot towards the goal defended by Kasper Schmeichel after a pass from Riley McGree and even managed to score between two defenders.
Until the end of the match, Denmark pressed but never managed to reverse the course of events and were eventually defeated. It is the first time that the Danes have left a World Cup without winning a match. This removal comes as a huge surprise after the team, coached by Kasper Hjulmand, reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and won nine out of ten matches in their group in qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar.
