Former French Formula 1 driver Patrick Tambay died this Sunday at the age of 73, after a long illness, the French news agency France Press (AFP) announced, citing family sources.
Patrick Tambay competed in Formula 1 between 1977 and 1979 and then between 1981 and 1986 for the Surtees, Theodore, McLaren, Ligier, Ferrari, Ranault and Haas Lola teams, winning two Grands Prix.
The Frenchman won for his debut in 1982, at the German Grand Prix, in Hockenheim, behind the wheel of a Ferrari, and also triumphed at the 1983 San Marino Grand Prix, in Imola, also at the service of the transalpine team.
In total, he competed in 114 Grands Prix, achieving 11 podiums and two fastest laps, as well as five ‘pole positions’.
In 1977 and 1980, Tambay, who had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for many years, also won the North American CanAm championship.
