A young man died this Wednesday in Montpellier, at the end of France’s victory over Morocco for the World Cup, after being hit by a fleeing driver, the Hérault department and French media reported.
The teenager was taken to the emergency hospital but ended up dying, the Hérault department in southern France said in a statement.
The vehicle involved in the incident was recovered near the scene and impounded, and police forces are investigating what happened, it added.
According to several French media, the 14-year-old teenager was of Moroccan origin and the driver of the vehicle fled.
The images of the incident, which circulate on social networks, show a driver running over a group of supporters of the North African team, after seeing how the French flag was torn from his car.
Paris, like other French cities, and Brussels registered riots on Wednesday night, after the match that ended with France’s victory over Morocco (2-0), in the semifinal of the World Cup in Qatar.
France, reigning champion, ‘stamped’ this Wednesday against Morocco the ‘passport’ to a fourth World Cup final, being the first to add three appearances in the decisive match of the 21st century.
