French striker Karim Benzema announced the end of his international career for the country on Monday. The announcement comes a day after the Gauls were eliminated from the World Cup – proof that the player was not playing because he was injured.
In a publication on the social network Instagram, Benzema – who celebrates his 35th birthday this Monday – wrote that he has “made the efforts and mistakes that led to where he is today and that he is “proud of it”. “I wrote my story and ours ends,” the publication concludes.
For the French national team, the forward of Real Madrid made 97 appearances and 37 goals. Benzema’s international career, remember, was put on hold for six years because of a blackmail case involving another French player, Mathieu Valbuena.
