American Kathy Whitworth, record holder of LPGA Tour titles, died on Saturday at the age of 83, the Association of Professional Female Golfers reported on Twitter on Sunday.
“Kathy Whitworth died suddenly on Saturday night while celebrating Christmas Eve with friends,” the LPGA said in a terse statement.
Throughout her career, Kathy Whitworth won 88 tournaments on the LPGA circuit, setting a record for titles won by a golfer on a professional circuit, even surpassing names like Tiger Woods or Sam Snead, both with 82.
“Golf, and the world at large, has lost one of its most incredible women. Kathy was a champion in the true sense of the word, both on and off the golf course.”said the Commissioner of the LPGA, Mollie Marcoux Samaan, in a statement on the organization’s official website on the Internet.
Kathy Whitworth won the first LPGA trophy on July 8, 1962 and the last on May 12, 1985, when she was already 51 years old.
