Former French F1 driver Philippe Streiff dies at age 67

Former French Formula 1 driver Philippe Streiff has died aged 67, F1Media, the organisation’s official communications agency, reported on Saturday.

“I am saddened by the passing of Philippe Streiff. He has shown incredible courage and determination throughout his life,” said F1 president Stefano Domenicali.

In 1989 Streiff had an accident at the Jacarepaguá circuit in Rio de Janeiro during a training session for the purpose of testing tires for the French AGS team. As a result of the accident, he was paralyzed.

Born in 1955, the pilot has since devoted his life to defending people with disabilities. The accident helped F1 authorities improve the safety and medical infrastructure of the circuits.

Philippe Streiff competed in fifty Grands Prix in the 1980s, most of them for the British Tyrrell team.
