Barcelona president says European Super League could be a reality in 2025

The European Super League could become a reality in 2025, said FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta on Thursday, awaiting a favorable decision from European justice.

“We will receive the ruling of the European Court of Justice in March or April. If the resolution is favourable, I think the Superliga can continue in 2025,” said the manager in an interview with radio Cadena SER.

Proceedings against UEFA and FIFA, bodies that govern European and world football respectively, accused of abuse of power by threatening to expel clubs and footballers seeking to join the Superliga project, should decide earlier this year.

Still, mid-December is theThe Advocate General of the European Court of Justice has already issued an initial opinion, but in favor of UEFA, and his conclusions are often followed by the judges.

Launched in April 2021, bringing together several of Europe’s biggest clubs, the private and private league project collapsed in just 48 hours, despite widespread anger from the clubs’ own fans and various threats of political action.

In mid-October, the company A22 was founded, promoter of the project, which currently only deserves the unequivocal support of the Spaniards of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid and the Italians of Juventus, among the 12 of the original idea.

The six English clubs appointed to the Superliga — Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham — pulled out of the project and even pledged not to participate in it in the future: Atlético de Madrid, AC Milan and Inter are the other emblems of the 12 founders.

“The Superliga will be an open competition. I would not have started this project if the competition was not open”, clarified Laporta and wanted clubs to play a more important role in defining their leagues.

In October, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez accused European football of being “sick” as the European Super League could revive it.
