Nani suffers a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee

The Portuguese international soccer player Nani suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Melbourne Victory reported this Sunday, in a note sent to the Portuguese news agency.

“Portuguese striker Luís Nani suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Today’s radiological examinations confirmed the extent of the injury sustained at the end of Friday’s match against the Brisbane Roar,” the statement said.

Nani started Friday’s Australian championship game, which Melbourne Victory lost 1-0 at home to the Brisbane Roar, and saw the Portuguese full-back pick up an injury late on.

Nani, 36, is in his first season at the Melbourne Victory, having signed for Venice, coming from the Italian Serie A, in January, after three seasons with the North American Orlando City.

“Our fears were confirmed after the test results and we are all very sad for Nani,” coach Tony Popovic said today.

At a time when the team has only three victories in 10 games and is ranked 11th, with the same 10 points as the last, Perth Glory, the coach admitted that the Portuguese striker’s injury weighs even more.

“Nani has greatly influenced the club through his leadership and experience and it will be a great loss for our squad. The entire club will be mobilized to support Nani in his recovery phase”, stated the coach.
