Sporting and Arouca compete for a place in the League Cup final

This Tuesday, Sporting and Arouca will compete for a place in the final of the Football League Cup, in Leiria, in the first semifinal of the 16th edition of the competition, starting at 7:45 p.m.

The ‘lions’, winners of four trophies, including the last two, in the city of Leiria, seek their seventh presence in the decisive match, against the Arouquenses, newcomers at this stage of the competition, who seek to become the 11th shield to reach the final of a League Cup.

After the first round, Rúben Amorim’s men remain in fourth place in the I Liga, with 32 points, 12 behind leader Benfica, while the team led by Armando Evangelista is in sixth place, with 26.

This will be the 14th meeting between the two teams, the third in the League Cup, with Sporting winning the first 13 games, and Arouca achieving their first victory over the ‘lions’, on matchday 11 of the championship.

On October 29, captain João Basso, in the 47th minute, scored the winning goal for the Arouquenses, in what was then the fourth defeat for the ‘lions’ in the 2022/23 edition of the I Liga.

The match between Arouca and Sporting, in the semifinals of the League Cup, will be played at the Estádio Municipal Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, in Leiria, starting at 7:45 p.m., under the refereeing of Fábio Veríssimo, from the association of Leiria.

On Wednesday, national champion FC Porto seeks its fifth final in the competition, against Académico de Viseu, of the II Liga.
