Sporting and FC Porto face off tonight in the 14th final in the entire history of Portuguese football, including all competitions of the last century and the decisions in the Portuguese championship, in the 1920s and 1930s. The balance is in favor of the lions , who won eight times and lost five times.
The history of the finals between the two great rivals began in the early days of Portuguese football, more precisely in the Portuguese championship, and with three triumphs for the dragons, one of which was entitled to a final to find the winner. FC Porto still played on Campo da Constitution and Sporting on Campo Grande.
The Portuguese Championship then gave way to the Portuguese Cup from 1938. But it was many years before they faced each other again in a final of the Queen of Portuguese football. The first of five clashes occurred in 1977-78, when the Lions beat FC Porto de José Maria Pedroto 2-1 in a final, after drawing 1-1 in the first game.
In 1993-94 the dragons got their revenge and also won 2-1, and again the game was decided in a final, after extra time. It was a match marked by violent scenes in Jamor, with flying stones during the celebration of FC Porto and Minister Manuela Ferreira Leite who needed police protection.
In order not to escape the rule, the cup final of 1999/00 also had to be decided in a very last final, and again with a victory for the blue and white (2-0). They met twice more at Jamor and with triumphant smiles at Sporting – in 2007/08 with a 2-0 win (double by Rodrigo Tiuí) in extra time and in 2018/19 in the penalty shootout lottery, after a 2-2 at the end of extra time.
In the Cândido de Oliveira Super Cup, the two rivals faced each other four times. And in this competition that brings together the winner of the championship and the cup, Sporting always came out on top. The first time, in 1995, when the match was still decided over two legs, it took a third match to find the winner, in this case the Lions (3-0). In 2000 it was only decided in the third game, with a lion victory with the smallest difference. The club from Alvalade also triumphed in the editions of 2000 (1-0) and 2008 (2-0).
In the League Cup, a trophy that the lions have already won five times and where FC Porto remains blank, the two rivals have already met once in the decisive game. It was in the 2018/19 season, and after a draw (1-1) at the end of the 90 minutes, the Lions were victorious in the penalty shoot-out (3-1)
FC Porto took the lead just before the end, in the 79th minute, through the Brazilian Fernando Andrade, but with 90″+2, the Dutchman Bas Dost equalized after a penalty offered by the Spaniard Óliver Torres.
On penalties, Alex Telles still scored Porto’s first kick, but then Éder Militão shot wide, Renan Ribeiro stopped Hernâni’s shot and Felipe hit the crossbar, with Bas Dost, Bruno Fernandes and Nani scoring for Sporting, who were only able to save a try from Coates missed (shot over the bar).
