FC Porto equals Benfica’s record of 83 trophies by winning the League Cup

Today FC Porto won its 83rd football trophy in its history by winning the first League Cup, in Leiria, against Sporting (2-0), thus starting to share the national record of titles with Benfica (83). Goals from Stephen Eustáquio (10 minutes) and Iván Marcano (86′) sealed the final of the 16th edition of the youngest competition in Portuguese professional football, which the blue and whites had never won, having already lost in 2009-10, 2012 -13, 2018-19 and 2019-20.

FC Porto completed its history in the internal competitions and for the first time held the four most important domestic trophies simultaneously, equaling the 83 achievements of Benfica, who last celebrated it at the beginning of 2019-20, when Sporting defeated (5 -0) to triumph for the eighth time in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, at Estádio Algarve.

In this blind count, which places an International League and a National Cup on the same level, the battle is two as the Lions, who even joined the rehab from the League Cup to the Super Cup in 2021-22, are in a distant third place, with 54 successes.

FC Porto moved two trophies away from Benfica at the end of last season, sealing the 30th scepter of the I Liga with a record 91 points, and the 18th Portuguese Cup, after a victory in the final against Tondela, with 3 – 1 in Jamor, after removing the two Lisbon rivals.

Completed in May 2022, the ninth double would give rise to the seventh treble two months later, as the team coached by Sérgio Conceição beat Beira, recently relegated to the II Liga, again 3–0 in Aveiro, sealing the 23rd. ª Super Cup.

In national competitions, FC Porto has still managed four victories in the defunct Campeonato de Portugal, the predecessor competition of the Taça de Portugal, which took place between 1921-22 and 1937-38, to end a curse in the league today League Cup which has continued since 2007-08.

The Blues and Whites are the most awarded Portuguese club in international football, with seven sceptres – European Champions Cup (1986-87), Champions League (2003-04), UEFA Cup (2002-03), Europa League (2010) – 11 ), Intercontinental Cup (1987 and 2004) and European Super Cup (1987-88) – against two of the incarnates and one of the lions.

FC Porto and Benfica are now tied for the lead in overall trophies, which the dragons had previously commanded, reaching a four-point lead over the eagles (74-69) after winning the Cândido de Oliveira Super Cup in 2013.

The Luz club would resume the lead (81-74) with a 12-0 partial over the next four years, ending in an unprecedented ‘fourth championship’, flanked by three other editions of the Super Cup, three of the League Cup and two of the Portuguese Cup.

FC Porto celebrated again in 2017-18, avoiding the debut of Sérgio Conceição – he is now the club’s most titled coach – Benfica’s fifth, who responded with the 2018-19 recapture, at a time when the dragons only remained for the Super Cup.

That decision, usually contested in the summer between the league champions and the Portuguese Cup winner, represented Benfica’s latest conquest, in 2019-20, while FC Porto would repeat that season’s double in 2021-22, with in between : combined two more successes in the queen league, two in the Super Cup and one in the League Cup.
