Nick Kyrgios escapes conviction in assault case despite pleading guilty

An Australian court on Friday dismissed the case against tennis player Nick Kyrgios, accused of sexual assault by ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari, despite pleading guilty at the hearing.

The judge, Beth Campbell, also ordered that the case not appear on Kyrgios’ criminal record. The magistrate justified the decision, claiming that the seriousness of the case was “low level” and that the tennis player was not at risk of committing the same offense again.

Campbell said Kyrgios misbehaved but there was no planning or foresight and it was a “single stupid act” by a young man trying to get out of a tense situation.

“I respect today’s decision and thank the court for dropping the charges. I was not in a good place when this happened and I reacted to a difficult situation in a way that I deeply regret. I know it is not right and offer my sincerest apologies.” for the pain caused,” said Kyrgios.

At the hearing in Canberra, the 27-year-old admitted pushing his then-girlfriend in an incident that took place in January 2021 during an argument. Court documents, cited by public broadcaster ABC, indicate that Passari tried to stop Kyrgios from opening a taxi door until the athlete pushed her and caused her to fall, injuring her shoulder and knee.
