Carlos Queiroz is the new coach of Qatar

The Portuguese Carlos Queiroz is the new soccer coach of Qatar, after having been in the 2022 World Cup organized by that Arab country with Iran, it was announced this Monday.

“Carlos Queiroz is the new technical director of the Qatar team. We wish the Portuguese coach every success with our team”, reads the official page of the Qatar Football Federation, on the social network Twitter.

The 69-year-old Portuguese succeeds the Spanish Félix Sánchez Bas, 47, who was dismissed a month ago by the Qatar Football Association, after the 2022 World Cup, after five years in charge of the team.

Queiroz, who was the Portuguese coach for two periods (1991/93 and 2008/10), had also left the Iran team after the World Cup, for which he had been hired to replace the Croatian Dragan Skocic.

Throughout a 30-year career that began in 1991, Queiroz has led six teams, having led the United Arab Emirates (1999), South Africa (2000 to 2001) and Colombia (2019 to 2020), in addition to Portugal. (1991 to 1993 and 2008 to 2010), Iran (2011 to 2019 and 2022) and Egypt (2021 to 2022).

After winning two U-20 World Cups with Portugal, in 1989 and 1991, with the so-called ‘golden generation’, Queiroz was chosen to lead the main team to the 1994 World Cup in the United States, but he did not achieve that goal and left office. , at the time, with strong criticism of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

They followed three seasons at Sporting (the most they achieved was a Portuguese Cup) and steps through the United States (MetroStars), Japan (Nagoya Grampus), the Emirates and South Africa, until arriving in England, in 2002/03, to be an assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

The following season, Queiroz was chosen to manage Real Madrid, but his adventure with the ‘merengue’ shield, for which he won the Spanish Super Cup, only lasted one season, eventually returning to Manchester, again to be ‘number two’. ‘. ‘ by Ferguson.

In 2008, the former goalkeeper, born in Nampula, Mozambique, returned to the Portuguese national team, this time to replace Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari and guarantee qualification for the 2010 World Cup, a goal he achieved.

In South Africa, Portugal fell in the round of 16 against Spain (1-0), who would win the competition, and Queiroz once again left his position in open conflict with the FPF leadership, but also with some Portuguese players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo or Pepe.

In 2011, the coach arrived in Iran, where he stayed for eight years, playing in two World Cups, in which he always reached the group stage.

In Brazil, in 2014, the Iranian team only managed a draw, but, in 2018, in Russia, Queiroz achieved a victory (1-0 over Morocco), only the second in the history of that country in world championships, and tied with Portugal (1-1).

In Qatar, Carlos Queiroz participated for the fourth time in a World Cup, third in a row with Iran, after having led Portugal in the 2010 edition, in South Africa, where he achieved his best record, reaching the round of 16.
