Benfica is the club with the best balance between signings and sales of footballers in the last five seasons, from 2018/19 to date, with a positive balance of around €370 million.
The study carried out by the Football Observatory (CIES) highlights the Lisbon club as the one with the best performance since 2018/19, mainly based on the 2019/20 and current seasons, with the sales of João Félix and Enzo Fernandéz.
The “incarnates” had a volume of about a billion euros (1,053 ME), but in 2019/20, after the sale of Félix to Atlético Madrid (127 ME), it capitalized 162 ME, and in its current state it is already at 158 ME, with the departure of Enzo Fernandéz to Chelsea (121 ME).
In this balance, CIES only counts a negative balance for the “eagles” in 2020/21, at the time of Jorge Jesus’ return to Luz, during which the club suffered a loss of around 20 million euros.
Behind the ‘incarnates’ appear the French from Lille, with a balance of 308 million, but a lower turnover of 737 ME, on a stage that is complemented by the Dutch from Ajax, with a total of 292 ME and 993 ME.
In this top-100 ‘studied’ by CIES, there is also Sporting, the second highest rated Portuguese club and fifth overall, with the ‘lions’ having a positive balance of 268 ME and a volume of 656 ME.
FC Porto and Sporting de Braga also have positive accounts in this chapter, with CIES ranking the ‘dragons’ eighth out of 100 clubs (178 ME in balance, 617 in volume) and the ‘arsenalistas’ ninth (142 ME in equilibrium, 219 by volume).
On the other hand, the biggest spenders and with the lowest income from player departures are some of the British colossus and Chelsea in the lead, with a volume of more than two billion in these five seasons and a negative balance of 749 ME.
This season, the ‘blues’ have already suffered a loss of around 620 million euros, almost tripling the cost of the two previous seasons with the highest spending on players, the 2019/20 (204 ME) and 2020/21 (239 ME ).
Manchester United (-670 ME), Arsenal (-544 ME), Tottenham (-477 ME), West Ham (-435 ME), Newcastle (-422 ME), Aston Villa (-370 ME) and Wolverhampton (-355 ME ) ) continue as the clubs with the worst balance, followed in a top-10 by the Italians from Juventus (-337 ME) and closing with Liverpool (-313 ME).
