PSP asks for more “detailed” searches at Sporting-FC Porto to avoid fireworks

The PSP said this Friday it had asked for more “detailed” inspections of supporters in Sunday’s match between Sporting and FC Porto, counting into the 20th round of the I Liga, to detect pyrotechnic objects.

During the pre-match press conference at Estádio José Alvalade, in Lisbon, which is considered “high risk”, the Public Security Police (PSP) were asked what would be done to prevent fireworks at the stadium, following the outbreak of objects from For example, he played in the League Cup final, played between FC Porto and Sporting, in Leiria.

“An even more meticulous work was requested from the promoter,” said PSP manager Francisco Alves, also talking about the difficulty of finding fireworks that are the size of “half a pen”.

“Among 60,000 people, pyrotechnic objects may come in,” the intendant emphasizes, but guarantees that they “always” ask promoters to carry out thorough inspections.

Francisco Alves classified the fireworks as “dangerous to everyone, to the wearer, to those who use them and to the supporter standing next to them”, also recalling that they are illegal in stadiums.

With regard to the recent mega-surgery involving Sporting and Benfica cheerleading teams, which culminated in the arrest of members of these groups, the PSP chief said hostility to police should not be the “way”.

“What we’re urging is that you don’t go down that road [animosidade para com os agentes]. If they do not want to take the pedagogical path, we will obviously intervene,” he stressed, noting that, in addition to the various police teams deployed for the event, which will form a “perimeter” around the stadium, there will be non-uniformed agents among the supporters.

With a forecast of 45,000 supporters at Estádio José de Alvalade, PSP suggests supporters arrive from 4pm, the time when the doors of the ‘lion’s enclosure’ open.

Police say they expect about 2,500 FC Porto supporters and ask them to focus on Avenida Padre Cruz, next to the Armed Forces Disabled Association, with the officers escorting them to Gate 1 of the Estádio de Alvalade from 3:45 p.m. .

Between 3:50pm and 5:30pm, the streets around the stadium will be “heavily conditioned”, especially on Rua Professor Fernando da Fonseca (between gate 1 of the stadium and Rotunda Visconde de Alvalade), with PSP asking match spectators to use public transport.

The derby between Sporting, fourth with 38 points, and FC Porto, second with 45 (eight behind leader Benfica, who still has one game to play), will take place on Sunday from 6 p.m. in Estádio José Alvalade, in Lisbon.

The game is part of the 20th round of the 1st Portuguese Football League.
