Turkey national handball team captain Cemal Kütahya died, as well as his five-year-old son, as a result of the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6, the International Handball Federation (IHF) said on Tuesday.
“It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Cemal Kütahya, captain of our men’s handball team, and his son Çinar Kütahya, who were buried under the rubble of the house where they lived in the city of Antioquia”the Turkish handball federation reports in a statement adopted by the IHF.

32-year-old Kütahya, also captain of the Turkish beach handball team, played for Hatay Büyükıehir Belediyespor, the current leader of the Turkish league, a club the right-back joined in the summer of 2022 after passing through CSU Suceava after he lost Al -Shamal, from Qatar, with whom he became champion of the Arab Champions League in 2020.
Kütahya’s wife, four months pregnant, as well as her mother-in-law, who lived at the same address, are still missing, the Turkish federation said.
On February 6, Turkey and Syria registered earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, with strong aftershocks, including one measuring 6.0.
The catastrophe caused more than 35,000 deaths in Turkey and Syria, according to the most recent preliminary data, the latter being the scene of a civil war that has lasted for more than a decade.
