Amorim: ‘A season below expectations and even the Europa League will not be a lifeline’

Rúben Amorim admitted this Wednesday that Sporting is having a season far above expectations and that even the hypothetical Europa League victory will not change that scenario. At the launch of this Thursday’s game in Alvalade against Midtjylland (8 p.m.), in the league play-off, the coach admitted that the planning for the new season is already being made without thinking about the income of the champions.

“A lifeline to win the Europa League? No. We would like to win a title, but that’s not what will save the season. This season is far below expectations, it’s not a lifeline to win the Europa League,” said the coach , aware that the current position in the league gives the club practically no chance of reaching a place that gives access to the Champions League.

Amorim later rejected the idea that failing to qualify for next season’s champions, due to the lack of UEFA revenue, could disrupt the football team’s schedule, noting that this has already been taken care of. With salaries we can count without the Champions League. I don’t think the Europa League revenue, which is not big, makes any difference. Last year we went to the Champions League and sold the best players. We fight for life. We prepare the future by deploying Chermiti, Fatawu. We are already protecting that non-accession,” he explained.

Speaking of Chermiti, and as DN reported on Wednesday, the Leonine coach confirmed that the 18-year-old striker’s extension is in full swing: “Everything is under control and as far as I know it will be resolved soon. He still has his contract runs for another year. He knows he will get opportunities. I don’t see a better place for them. They grew up here and want to play for Sporting.”

Amorim also admitted that Sporting may have some advantage due to the fact that Midtjylland has not played since November and that the team will know how to take back the good in the defeat (2-1) against FC Porto in the last round. as well as learning from the mistakes made in the classic. “Let’s tell Marcus [Edwards] that, when he is in front of goal, to shoot for FC Porto’s two shots, try that at least one is not a goal. Football has these things, there are phases like that, we know the mistakes we make, but we also know what to do. If we don’t score and concede a goal, it’s harder for the team to keep the same record.”
