Fernando Gomes considers that “there is also talent in women’s football that must be taken advantage of”. “Portuguese girls are as talented as Portuguese boys. The work we have been doing is rewarded by this achievement. They did a record-worthy job to reach this high point and conquer an unprecedented presence for Portugal in the World Cup” , said. he said, thanking “the clubs, specifically the I Liga, who accepted our challenge to have women’s soccer teams.”
“When the base is expanded, more girls can be found to represent the national team. They have been playing for the youngest teams for five or six years now, ”she points out.
“It’s not just an achievement for this generation. It’s an achievement for future generations. Naturally, this achievement will catapult greater enthusiasm and more girls will want to play women in Portugal,” she adds.
This Wednesday, Portugal beat Cameroon 2-1 in the final of Group A of the Intercontinental Play-off, in Hamilton, New Zealand. With this victory, Portugal makes history and guarantees its first qualification for a Women’s Soccer World Cup.
