The BE coordinator, Catarina Martins, praised this Wednesday the “unprecedented feat” of the Portuguese women’s soccer team in qualifying for the 2023 World Cup, highlighting the victories “on and off the field” of these athletes.
The Portuguese women’s soccer team qualified this Wednesday for the 2023 World Cup, beating Cameroon 2-1, in the final of Group A of the Intercontinental Play-off, in Hamilton, New Zealand.
“An unprecedented feat and now with certainty: in a world still so marked by sexism and discrimination, each of these incredible athletes has victories on and off the field,” praised Catarina Martins through the social network Twitter.
This qualification was also welcomed by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, the Prime Minister, António Costa, and the PSD leader, Luís Montenegro.
A penalty scored by Carole Costa, in the 90+4 minute, sealed the unprecedented Portuguese classification, after, in the 89th minute, the Cameroonian Ajara Nchout had ‘cancelled’ Portugal’s first goal, scored by Diana Gomes, in the minute 22.
Francisco Neto’s men join runners-up Holland (July 23), Vietnam (27) and champions United States (August 1) in Group E, from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
