Liverpool ‘crushed’ Manchester United 7-0 this Sunday, adding their biggest-ever victory on the 26th day over the ‘red devils’, who suffered the worst league defeat in English football for nearly 100 years.
At Anfield Road, on a record day, Egyptian Salah scored twice, as did Dutchman Gakpo and Uruguayan Darwin Nunez (ex-Benfica), to become the Reds’ all-time top goalscorer in the Premier League, with 129 goals, making him Robbie Fowler outperformed.
It was a ‘dream’ Sunday for Liverpool, but a ‘nightmare’ for Manchester United, which equaled the heaviest defeat in the league’s history, something not seen since 1930, when they also lost 7-0 members against Aston Villa.
“What’s going on here is a lot of sadness, a lot of anger. Losing a game at a rival’s home is bad enough, losing like this is even worse. I’m already thinking about the next game. We can’t do nothing about this game right now” , said Bruno Fernandes after the duel with Liverpool.
The Portuguese midfielder captained Manchester United, while Diogo Dalot was also part of the starting eleven.
The defeat began to be built up by Gakpo, in the 43rd minute, after a balanced first half, who did nothing to predict United’s second half challenge ‘debacle’.
Darwin, in the 47th minute, and Gakpo again, in the 50th minute, increased the advantage, with Salah turning the scenario into defeat, in the 66th minute.
Darwin scored twice in the 75th minute and with Diogo Jota on the pitch, Liverpool made history through Salah in the 83rd minute and Brazil’s Firmino in the 88th minute.
Despite the ‘defeat’, Manchester United remain in third place with 49 points, while Liverpool moved up to fifth with 42, three of the places for access to next season’s Champions League.
In the other game of the day, in a duel between teams battling for maintenance, Nottingham Forest and Everton tied for two goals, highlighting Welshman Brennan Johnson’s brace at the ‘Tricky Trees’.
The round ends on Monday, with Fulham, from Marco Silva, visiting Brentford, in a match between London emblems.
