7-0. Liverpool crushes Manchester United on a day of records and history

Liverpool ‘crushed’ Manchester United 7-0 this Sunday, adding on matchday 26 the biggest victory in their history over the ‘red devils’, who suffered the worst defeat in the English football league in almost 100 years.

At Anfield Road, in a record day, the Egyptian Salah scored twice, as did the Dutchman Gakpo and the Uruguayan Darwin Núñez (ex-Benfica), and became the top scorer for the ‘reds’ in the history of the Premier League, with 129 goals, surpassing Robbie Fowler.

“This record has been in my head since I became a Liverpool player. To achieve it against Manchester United and with this result is simply incredible. Now I go home, celebrate with my family, have tea and sleep”, said the 30. 19-year-old Egyptian striker, who has been with the Reds since 2017/18.

It was a ‘dream’ Sunday for Liverpool, but a ‘nightmare’ for Manchester United, who equaled the heaviest defeat in the history of the competition, something that had not happened since 1930, when they also suffered 7-0 against Aston Town.

“What is happening in here is a lot of sadness, a lot of anger. Losing an opponent’s home game is bad enough, losing like this is even worse. I’m already thinking about the next game. Nothing about this game now, “said Bruno Fernandes after the duel with Liverpool.

The Portuguese midfielder captained Manchester United, while Diogo Dalot was also part of the starting eleven.

The win began to be built by Gakpo, in the 43rd minute, after a balanced first half, which at all presaged the ‘debacle’ of United in the second part of the challenge.

Darwin, at 47′, and again Gakpo, at 50′, increased the lead, with Salah changing the scenario to a thrashing, at 66′.

Darwin scored twice in the 75th minute and, with Diogo Jota on the field, Liverpool made history through Salah, in the 83rd minute, and the Brazilian Firmino, in the 88th minute.

Despite the ‘defeat’, Manchester United remains in third place, with 49 points, while Liverpool rose to fifth, with 42, three of the places to access the Champions League next season.

In the other game of the day, in a duel between teams fighting for maintenance, Nottingham Forest and Everton tied at two goals, highlighting the double by Welshman Brennan Johnson at ‘Tricky Trees’.

The round ends on Monday, with Marco Silva’s Fulham visiting Brentford’s ground, in a match between London emblems.
