Ethiopians Nibret Melak and Almaz Ayana win the Lisbon Half Marathon

Ethiopian athletes Nibret Melak and Almaz Ayana won this Sunday in the men’s and women’s races, respectively, the 32nd edition of the Lisbon half marathon.

Nibret Melak completed the more than 21 kilometers of the race in 59:06 minutes, leaving his compatriot Hagos Berhe, second to a second more, and the Kenyan Vincent Ngetich, third to four seconds, in a final decided to the sprint.

In the women’s race, Almaz Ayana reached the finish line alone in the Belém area, in front of the Belém Cultural Center, with a time of 1:05.30 hours. The women’s podium was made up exclusively of Ethiopian athletes, with Girmawit Gebrzihair Gebru in second, 20 seconds further, and Tiruye Mesfin in third, 58 seconds behind.

The 2023 Lisbon half marathon included athletes from 14 countries among the elite squad, one of the most diverse representations in history, and more than 30,000 registered in the different races that made up the weekend.
