Ethiopian athletes Nibret Melak and Almaz Ayana won the men’s and women’s races respectively in the 32nd edition of the Lisbon Half Marathon on Sunday.
Nibret Melak covered the 21 kilometers of the race in 59:06 minutes, so that compatriot Hagos Berhe, second with one second more, and Kenyan Vincent Ngetich, third with four seconds behind, decided on the sprint in a final.
In the women’s race, Almaz Ayana arrived alone at the finish in the Belém area, in front of the Centro Cultural de Belém, with a time of 1:05:30. The women’s podium consisted solely of Ethiopian athletes, with Girmawit Gebrzihair Gebru in second place, 20 seconds ahead, and Tiruye Mesfin in third, 58 seconds off.
At the 2023 Lisbon Half Marathon, athletes from 14 countries were part of the elite team, one of the most diverse representations ever, and more than 30,000 entered the various races that made up the weekend.
