Portuguese tennis player Nuno Borges, 80th in the world ranking, won the final of the challenger in Phoenix on Sunday against Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko, 132nd, after turning the scoreboard against an athlete from the qualifier.
After an hour and 34 minutes, the national number one won in three sets, with partials of 4-6, 6-2 and 6-1.
The Portuguese had a worse match and lost the opening set 6-4 against the Russian.

It was the seventh final of a ‘challenger’ in singles for 26-year-old Nuno Borges, who already won this year in Antalya, in 2021, in Barletta, in 2022 and in Monterrey, with a new title and the biggest in career — excluding doubles results — as this is a Category 175 tournament.
In addition to the week’s triumphs in the United States, Borges is also picking up an important league win after beating Argentine Diego Schwartzmann, former world number eight and second seed here, 2-0.
