The Portuguese Ricardo Batista won this Sunday the bronze medal in the second stage of the Triathlon World Cup, in New Plymouth, New Zealand, finishing 36 seconds behind the winner, the New Zealander Hayden Wilde.
Batista completed the second of the six stages of the Triathlon World Championship Series in 56.32 minutes, the same time as the second placed Tayler Reid from New Zealand, while the winner registered 55.57.
The Portuguese triathlete, who had been 33rd in the first stage, in Abu Dhabi, on March 3, completed the 750-meter swim test in 09.01 minutes, before marking 31.27 in the 20-kilometer cycle and 15.03 in the five kilometers of the race.
“I think it was a race well done. I came out of the water second, feeling pretty good, controlled the swim segment. I handled the bike segment well, and when we started running, the New Zealand athlete ran straight away. I managed to go home with a third place, it is very good at this stage, since I have scored important points for the Olympic qualification, ”he said, in statements to the press office of the Portuguese Triathlon Federation.
In the women’s competition, the Portuguese Maria Tomé finished in sixth position, with 01:03.35 hours, and the victory was also achieved by the New Zealander Nicole van der Kaay (01:02.57), ahead of her compatriot Ainsley Thorpe (01:03.06). . ), second, and the Norwegian Solveig Lovseth (01:03.14), third.
