The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, attended the team’s match in Luxembourg and highlighted the exceptional way in which the Portuguese played and were received.
“It was exceptional for us Portuguese. You saw how the Portuguese sang the national anthem and the Luxembourg anthem and the Luxembourgers treated Portugal very well. One of the main leaders of the Luxembourg national team came to us, the coach, thanked us for coming here There was a very good spirit, the team played very well and we are very happy. It was worth it”, confessed Marcelo.
Joining the head of state was Prime Minister António Costa, who said that even the Luxembourg leaders liked the beautiful game, but not so much the result.
“A good way to start this classification. Qualifying is a process, but it’s good to start well, with this strength, especially playing in a very beautiful way. The Grand Duke, saying goodbye to us, said that it had been a pleasure to see a team play so well, obviously not having appreciated the result, but having enjoyed the football spectacle. That is the most important. The national team, the federation and the players are in luck”, added Costa.
The Portuguese team was isolated at the top of Group J for the 2024 Euro Cup qualification, after beating Luxembourg 6-0, in a match on the second day.
Cristiano Ronaldo, in minutes 9 and 31, João Félix, in minute 15, Bernardo Silva, in minute 18, and the substitutes Otávio, in minute 77, and Rafael Leão, in minute 88, scored the goals for the team led by the Spaniard Robert Martinez.
In a group that qualifies the first two for the final phase of Euro2024, Portugal now has six points, against four from Slovakia (2-0 to Bosnia-Herzegovina) and three from Bosnia and Iceland (7-0 in Liechtenstein).
