Euro 2024: Scotland stuns Spain into breakaway A

Scotland surprised Spain today with a 2-0 home win, adding their second victory in the start of Group A for qualifying for Euro2024 football.

Midfielder Scott McTominay was the highlight of the game, as he scored both goals for the British, in the 07th and 51st minutes, scoring for the fourth time in two qualifying matches, after scoring twice in the win over Cyprus (3-0) .

In the second meeting for the Spanish national team, twice European champions, new coach Luis de la Fuente suffered the first defeat, in what was the first Spanish defeat in a qualification for a European championship since October 2014 – there were 19 games without losses .

Spain have not lost an official game by more than a goal difference since the round of 16 of Euro 2016, against Italy (2-0), and in a qualifying match in over 16 years, since a defeat to Sweden (2-0), in October 2006 .

Scotland lead Group A by six points, three more than Spain, with Norway and Georgia (minus one game) adding the first point today, with a draw to a goal, while Cyprus, with just one game, still have not scored.

Without his great figure, striker Erling Haaland, Norway took the lead in Georgia, with a goal from Alexander Sorloth (15), after assisting Benfica’s Fredrik Aursnes, but the home side drew with Georges Mikautadze (60).

In Group I, Switzerland and Romania maintain the perfect record and lead by six points, after beating Israel (3-0) and Belarus (2-1) respectively.

In Geneva, Switzerland dominated Israel and won with goals from Ruben Vargas (39), Zeki Amdouni (48) and Silvan Widmer (52), while Romania decided to welcome Belarus in the first minutes, by Nicolae Stanciu (17) and Andrei Burka (19), with Vladislav Morozov (86) winding down.

Kosovo and Andorra drew 1-1 in the other Group I encounter, led by Switzerland and Romania, with six points. Kosovo has two points, Andorra and Israel have already added one and Belarus has yet to score.

Croatia, third in the 2022 World Cup, recorded its first win in Group D by beating Turkey 2-0 at home, with two goals from Mateo Kovacic (20 and 45+2), both from Mario Pasalic.

The Croatians now lead the ‘group’ with four points, just like Wales, who beat Latvia 1-0 at home, thanks to a precise header from Kiefer Moore (41).

Third in Group D is Turkey, with three points, with Armenia and Latvia, both with one game less, still without points.
